The history of the Chair commenced in 1997, when the Department of Social Theories was established under the guidance of Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor L.Kormich.

The demand in establishment of detached departments, which would be involved in graduation, arose with a view to new educative directions in Sociology and Political Science. Consequently, two chairs were established in the framework of the Department of Social Theories in June 2016: The Department of Political Theories and the Department of Sociological Theories.

The Department of Social Theories was renamed the Department of Sociology and Psychology on the 29th of August, 2016 in accordance with the decision of the Academic Council of the National University "Odessa Law Academy". This decision was taken in order to improve the  educational process, as well as make teaching of sociological and psychological disciplines more systematic.

The Chair is headed by Professor Lefterov.

In 2017, the National University "Odessa Law Academy" was licensed to train specialists majoring in Psychology, thereat the first students admitted the bachelor programme.
