Associate Professor of the department of criminal procedure, head of the higher education quality assessment department of the Center for Educational Training and Information and Analytical Work of the National University "Odessa Law Academy" Torbas Oleksandr from August 26 to September 3, 2017 participated in a study visit to the United States (Washington (DC), Lexington and Charlottesville (Virginia) to familiarize with the organization of legal education, the legal profession and the rule of law in support of the Justice Sector Reform Program "New Justice ", funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Ukraine. Representatives of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, the High Council of Justice, the National Agency for the Quality Assurance of Higher Education and the representatives of the best Ukrainian law schools also attended this visit.
During the study visit, the Ukrainian delegation had the opportunity to meet with representatives of associations that form and provide the modern legal education in the USA (American Bar Association, American Law School Council, Association of American Law Schools, Media company US News and World Report and others), and teachers and students of three law schools: Georgetown Law (Washington, DC), the Washington and Lee University School of Law (Lexington), University of Virginia School of Law (Charlottesville). During these meetings, the Ukrainian delegation learned about the procedure for access to legal schools and legal profession in the United States, and also got acquainted with the educational process in leading American law schools.
Also, on the personal invitation of Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States of America Valeriy Chaly, the Ukrainian delegation visited the Embassy of Ukraine in the United States. During the meeting, Ambassador Valery Chaly informed the group about the activities of the Embassy and the high level of cooperation between Ukraine and the United States. Educators, in turn, told the Ambassador about the current state of legal education in Ukraine and possible ways of reforming it.
According to the results of the visit, representatives of the Ukrainian delegation developed a series of proposals to improve the quality of education in law schools. Aslso, representatives of state authorities, which form the legal education system in Ukraine, and leading law schools, have agreed on cooperation in the field of reforming and further improving of legal education.
