Within the framework of initiative of the Institute of Europe of the University of Zurich, representatives of academic and business circles of Switzerland visited Moldova and Ukraine. The group includes lawyers, bankers, investors, parliamentarians, as well as representatives of the Institute of Europe at the University of Zurich. In Odessa, the delegation arrived with two objectives: to learn about the investment opportunities of Odessa region, and to discuss new spheres of cooperation between National University “Odessa Law Academy” and leading Swiss universities.
During their visit to the University, the members of the Swiss delegation learnt its history, peculiarities of organization of educational process, material and technical base, and also discussed with the president of the University, academician Sergey Kivalov the results and perspective directions of cooperation with Swiss partners.
In his speech to guests, Academician Sergey Kivalov emphasized the multifaceted nature of cooperation with the Institute of Europe of the University of Zurich. Among the most significant results he highlighted the organization of lectures on European integration and European Union law by professors of the Institute of Europe in 2015-2017, the participation of Ukrainian professors in the international network conference on European integration under the auspices of the Institute of Europe from 2013, the publication of scientific works by representatives of Odessa School of Law in review of the Institute of Europe, the organization of a study visit of Ukrainian students to the Institute of Europe in winter 2017.
Academician Sergey Kivalov also shared his further plans for cooperation with Swiss partners for next year, including student exchange program with Law Faculty of the University of Zurich, participation of Ukrainian professors in Ukrainian Studies Program at the University of Basel, the resumption of internship program for Ukrainian students in Switzerland, established by famous Swiss lawyer, Dr. Josef Bollag.
The Swiss guests highly appreciated the achievements and potential of international cooperation of National University "Odessa Law Academy" and expressed their readiness to contribute to its development.
"Since 2014, the Institute of Europe has been actively cooperating with National University "Odessa Law Academy". Within the framework of this cooperation, we organized a visit of Swiss politicians, lawyers, businessmen, investors, so that they would learn about Ukraine. The guests are very impressed with their visit to the academy, as in Switzerland most universities are located in old buildings, and National University "Odessa Law Academy" is very modern and equipped with the latest technology. They especially remember visit to the Museum of Rare Book, where unique legal editions are collected, many of which are preserved in a single copy. They were surprised that educational process is provided in English, German, French and that University students understand foreign lecturers easily", - said Nadezhda Vyazhankina, a research fellow at the Institute of Europe of the University of Zurich, a graduate of National University "Odessa Law Academy".
International cooperation is one of the most important activities of National University "Odessa Law Academy". Confirmation of the University's international recognition is its membership in the European Association of Universities, European Public Law Organization, Association of European Law Schools, European Public Law Association, participation in the activities of the Center for European Policy, the Center for European Policy Studies, the Institute of European Law, the Academic Council of Modern European Studios. The University has close links with the Council of Europe, the Venice Commission, the OSCE, the European Court of Human Rights and other international organizations, which creates opportunities for internships and potential employment. Thanks to well-established academic ties with the best universities in Europe, Ukrainian students can study at European universities in parallel, continuing their studies at National University "Odessa Law Academy" and to receive two diplomas.
