The department was created in January 1998. The head of the department is Doctor of Philosophy, Professor and Laureate of the State Prize of Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic in the sphere of science ant technique O. A. Ivakin. Previously, Doctor of Philosophy, Professor T. V. Rozova, headed the department for 10 years.
The Department of Philosophy provides for lecturing of a series of philosophy-related subjects such as logic, general philosophy and philosophy of law, religious sciences and ethics, which are regarded the effective means of world outlook formation and methodological orientation of the young generation of lawyers. For the Masters a special course “The methodology of the system approach and scientific research” was elaborated and is taught by O. A. Ivakin.

At present the academic process and scientific research work are conducted by the department’s 2 Doctors of Law (Professors O. A. Ivakin and T. V. Rozova), 5 Candidates of Law (Assosiate Professors L. M. Sumarokova, O. I. Nekrasov, N. B. Kapustina, lecturers I. I. Matyushyna and I. S. Smaznova), 1 senior lecturer (O. E. Nykytchenko), 2 lecturers (I. V. Shamsha and S. S. Stadnyk) and 2 laboratory assistants (M. O. Gudzova and Y. S. Kolesnykova).
Four candidate of law theses were defended at the department during the recent 10 years - graduand L. I. Savvina and post-graduate student I. I. Matyushyna became Candidates of Philosophy and post-graduate students I. S. Smaznova became Candidate of Law.
Scientific research of the department resulted in the publication of a considerable number of books and scientific articles. Thus, the following monographs were published within the recent period: “Dialectic philosophy” by O. A. Ivakin in 2003, “Specific features of the civil society formation in Ukraine” (T. V. Rozova, V. Y. Barkov, 2004).
One of the core tasks of the department is to provide the students, masters and post-graduate students with teaching and methodical aids. The following publications were prepared: “The fundamentals of epistemology (theory and methodology of scientific cognition)” (O.A.Ivakin, 2000); the series of teaching manuals on the history of philosophy by T.V. Rozova, 2000; “The fundamentals of logic” were published by L.M. Sumarokova and “Ethics” by O.I. Nekrasov in 2003, “Philosophy” in 2004 by O.A.Ivakin. In 2007 several manuals on special courses in English were issued, including “The fundamentals of democracy”, ‘Religious studies”, “Religion, policy and law” (O.E.Nikitchenko).
The staff of the Department of Philosophy takes part in the work of numerous conferences and congresses both national and international. In October 2005 a “round table”discussion on the theme “Actual problems of legal philosophy” was organized and held.
The scientific work with the students is held at the department within the framework of the students research section “Philosophy in modern epoch”, annual ONLA report conference and through the work of the discussion club “Logos” (under the supervision of I.V. Shamsha).
