Foreign languages departmentOdesa (Novorossiysk) University had separate departments of foreign languages – German, French and Italian from the first years of its foundation.

During the period from 1900 till 1917 there was no special department of foreign languages and the lectures were delivered by special lecturers in foreign languages who were in the staff of the Faculty of History and Philology. Starting from 1917 German was only taught. Later on English and French were introduced. An independent department of foreign languages was set up in 1937. Gradually, foreign languages were introduced as a compulsory subject to the curriculum of all the faculties. K.P. Lyubarsky was the first Head of the Department. Even then the Department amounted to nearly 50 lecturers. In the autumn of 1960 the Department was headed by Assistant Professor V.G.Shatukh. The laboratory of experimental phonetics began its work in 1963. At first it was under the supervision of V.G.Shatukh and later on it was headed by Assistant Professor T.O.Brovchenko. Starting from 1966 Assistant Professor Y.Y.Neidorf and Doctor of Philology V.G.Taranets were in charge of the Department for some period. From 1974 till 1987 Professor E.A.Nushikyan headed the Department. Research and educational activity was promoted at the time. M.Z.Yatsiy, G.V.Militch, O.L.Kirsanov, N.P.Vit, V.I.Lupersolskiy and L.V.Nizhnikova successfully defended their theses. Competitions in foreign languages were held in Kyiv and Uzhgorod. Students of the Faculty of Law took an active part in the German language development parties organized by the Department and supervised by its lecturer L.V.Dolenko. Student groups with a good knowledge of foreign languages were formed. These enabled their members to obtain certificates of interpreter. In 1987 the Department was divided into two foreign languages departments: a department for faculties of the humanities and a department for faculties of sciences (Head of the Department M.Z.Yatsiy). Doctor of Pedagogy Professor V.L.Skalkin headed the foreign languages department for faculties of the humanities. Since then the research work of the Department in the field of methodology improved which resulted in the defense of the theses in pedagogy by N.V.Vareshkina, L.V.Dobrovolska, and O.I.Yeremenok. V.L.Skalkin, L.V.Dolenko and N.P.Vit developed a new educational program in teaching foreign languages. The lecturers of the Department participated in the 3rd International Symposium of International Association of Teachers of the Russian Language and Literature (1989), International Conference in Tallinn (1991), and scientific conference in St. Petersburg (1994). Assistant Professors N.V.Vareshkina and L.V.Dobrovolska took a most active part in the work of the conferences. The Department was considered basic in the system of Odesa Inter-college Centre for many years. International relations of the foreign languages department for faculties of the humanities have been promoted since 1995. Close student exchange ties with Universities of Regensburg and Passau (West Germany), Manchester (England) and St. Andrew’s (Scotland) were established. The students of the Faculty of Law G.Ryzhkov, V.Gurevsky, V.Primachenko, G.Gaydenko and others joined 5 and 10 month courses at the Universities of Regensburg and Passau with the aim to study law system and improve their language skills. Traineeship abroad became accessible for the lecturers of the Department. N.P.Vit, L.V.Dobrovolska, N.V.Vareshkina, L.V.Nizhnikova, O.G.Yeremenok received such training in Great Britain. Foreign languages department headed by Professor V.G.Taranets was set up at Odesa National Law Academy, following its foundation on the basis of the Institute of Law of Odesa National University. The Department was formed mainly of the lecturers who had worked at Odesa National University. Professor V.Y.Mizetska, Assistant Professors L.V.Nizhnikova, N.V.Vareshkina, O.M.Obraztsova, such experienced lecturers as Assistant Professors N.P.Gavrish, T.I.Oliynyk, senior lecturers T.I.Mysarenko, G.M.Tarasova, M.S.Maykova, V.V.Zadriboroda, V.I.Khatsayuk, M.E.Alexeev and L.G.Podolyan as well as young and promising specialists L.S.Lozbina and O.A.Grishina successfully provide educational process. Doctor of Philology, Professor Vira Yaroslavivna Mizetska has been Head of the Department of foreign languages of ONLA since September 1998.
