Department the European Union and Comparative Law
Head of the Department, Candidate of Law, Professor, Minas R. ARAKELYAN
The department was organized on March 1, 2004 within the Faculty of International Relations and Legal Journalism and at is headed by Professor M. R. Arakelyan. The European Union and Comparative Law Department has become one of the leading departments of the Academy providing for the following series of subjects: European Union Law, Comparative Law, European Council Law, Comparative Advocacy, Comparative Criminal Law, Comparative Environmental Law, Comparative Labour Law, Comparative Administrative Law, Comparative Civil and Commercial Law and European Safety System. Learner’s guides and recommendations have been written and published on all the subjects. These subjects broaden juridical thinking and contribute to the process of the Ukrainian legal system’s integration into the general European legal space. 3 Doctors of Law, Professors, 1 Candidate of Law, Professor, 4 Candidates of Law, Associate Professors, 11 lecturers and 2 laboratory assistants provide for the educative process at the department and conduct research. The department team carries out the research on the theme “The dialogue of modern legal systems. Adaptation of the Ukrainian legal system to the European law”. The 2006 scientific research resulted in a monograph “The fundamentals of a civilising approach in comparative jurisprudence” (H. N. Bekhruz); in 2007 monographs “Comparative law in Ukraine: theoretical and methodological traditions (19th and early 20th centuries)” by M. A. Damirli and “Geopolitics of Ukraine” by M. D. Vasylenko were published. In the process of the department’s work two dissertations for the degree of Doctor of Law were defended by M. A. Damirli (2004) and H. N. Bekhruz (2006) and one more doctoral dissertation was prepared by O. K. Vyshnyakov. The department carries out intensive work aimed at methodological provision of the subjects read by department’s teachers. Thus, the teaching aid “Law of European Council. Schemes, Tables, Definitions and Commentaries” by M. A. Damirli and T. O. Antsupova was published in 2007. The lectures in English are read by the members of the department (M.D. Vasylenko, O.K. Vyshnyakov, O.M. Gladenko, T.O. Antsupova) who developed the relevant methodological recommendations. The department’s staff takes an active part in international, national scientific and practical conferences, seminars and “round table” meetings. The organization and holding of the international conference “Ukraine-EU free trade zone: legal and economic aspects” in June, 2007 by the department should be mentioned. A wide-scale student’s research work is carried out within the framework of the student’s scientific association.
