The Department of Civil law (account the Department of Roman law) is the one of the most ancient divisions of the legal education in Odessa.

Head of the Department, Doctor of law, Professor Yeugen O. HARYTONOV

In the firm belief we can affirm that modern Department of Civil law arose in 1865 - from the date of establishment of the University of Novorossiysk.

At the first educational year from the September, 7 of 1865 in the Law Department of the University of Novorossiysk among another 13 Departments it were the Department of Roman law,  the Department of Civil law with the civil judicial organization and court procedure, the Department of canonical law (where family and inheritance law also were studied).

That time the famous scientists worked on the Department of Civil law: Nikolay Dyuvernua, Jury Gambarov, Peter Citovich, Alexander Borovikosky and others.

In mid of 80-ty of 20 century E. Vaskovsky was the head of the Department of Civil law. He graduated from the University of Novorossiysk. During 6 year he had been working as a lawyer. His most important works are: "The organization of the bar" (1893) in 2 volumes, "The Doctrine of interpretation and use of law" (1901).

E. Vaskovsky wrote textbooks and books about the problems of Civil law, was the first pro-rector of the University.

The scientists of the Department of Civil law of the University of Novorossiysk made a great contribution to native science and practice. Professor P. Citovich took part in elaboration of the project the Charter of Promissory Note, several laws about Joint-Stock Companies, published "The textbook of Commercial law" (1891).

The teachers of the Department of Roman law had to know not only the Roman law but also some European languages and Latin. Therefore the selection of the teachers was very careful.

In connection with the social changes of 1917 the majority of teachers, the famous scientists, left the Motherland. The staff of the Department was being recovered for many years. Not numerous pre-revolutonary teachers formed the basis of the staff of the Department: E. Vaskovsky and representatives of new school of Civil law. J. Shereshevsky was the most popular among them. He investigated the problems of agency in Civil law. He wrote the monograph "Agency, mandatum and the letter of attorney" (1925), "The legal nature of cheque and relationships based on cheques" (1947).

On recovered law faculty of Odessa State University named after I.I. Mechnikov since 1947 till 1954 there was the Department of civil, collective-farm and land law (the head of the Department I. Sereda - since September 1952, then V. Poklonsky and J. Chervony).

Since July 1961 on the law department two Departments were established. Later -the Department of Civil law and process (the head of the Department - Associative Professor J. Chervony).

The staff of the Department recovered the traditions of scientific activity: B. Poklonsky studied problems of author’s and inventor’s law, J. Chervony - family law, V. Shachmatov - theory of agreements, A. Fedorov - transport law.

When the Odessa State Law Academy was established, the separate Department of civil process was created. The staff of the Department of civil process consisted from experienced scientists and teachers J. Chervony, I. Kryuchatov, V. Eurmolaeva, G. Volosaty, O. Solomahina.
