Extramural Faculty No1
The Extramural and Evening Department of the Law Faculty, of Odessa I.I. Mechnikov State University was reopened in July 1961. Associate Professor Y. S. Chervony was elected dean of the faculty (1961-1965) succeeded by Associate Professor K.I. Udalykh in 1965-1967. The foundation years of the Law Faculty were far from easy, thus the more valuable in this situation was the result - further development of extramural and evening forms of education, reopening of the day form of education (1966), efficient organization of educational process of all education forms. The period from 1960 to 1980 was notable for a high level of the student training and active research work of the teaching staff. One cannot but mark such scholars as Professor M.P. Orzikh, Professor Y.S. Chervony, Professor S.V. Dodin, Professor M.Y. Cherkes, Professor D.A. Bekerska, Professor I.O. Kryuchatov, Professor I.M. Syrota, Professor I.O. Sereda, Professor P.R. Stavisskyy and many others, whose research work was always remarkable for profound scientific logic and high professionalism. The excellent work of the methodologist L.O. Norenko should be also recollected and noted; she ran educational and methodological work of the dean’s office of the extramural department for a long time (1960-1992). From 1977 to 1993, Associate Professor I.M. Syrota headed the extramural and evening departments of the Law Faculty. Since September 1, 1993, the Law Institute was founded on the basis of the Law Faculty as a part of Odessa I.I. Mechnikov State University. The Extramural and Evening Department of the Law Institute was headed by the pro-rector for extramural and evening education Associate Professor S.V. Kivalov. At present new educational trends are set up, aimed at protection of legal rights and interests of both private citizens and legal entities; scientific research into various problems of legal regulation of social relations is carried out. Since 1999, the Extramural Department was reorganized into the Extramural and Post-graduate Education Faculty, which was again headed by Professor I.M. Syrota. The first years of independent existence of Odessa National Academy of Law became the years of consolidation and further development of the extramural department. From 2002 to 2007 Candidate of Law, Associate Professor Oleg V. Todoshchak, headed the faculty. Experienced specialists in teaching methods of the faculty Dean’s office - L.Y. Byelorukova, T.I. Tomchak, Y.M. Kuznetsova, Y.M. Tyeryekhova and O.V. Kytayka fully realize the specific character of the educational process at the faculty and put a lot of effort into its proper organization. The Extramural Faculty is one of the largest structural units of Odessa National Academy of Law. The number of students totals about 1,500. Nowadays the training of lawyers is carried out under three-level system - Bachelor, Specialist and Master of Law. Leading specialists who constantly improve the academic process and develop new educational programmes read lectures at the faculty. The departments are generously supplied both with the special methodological literature and with electronic computer equipment. The extramural students widely use the book fund of the library, the materials of which are under constant renewal. The library readily assists the students in self-training, preparation for the examinations, tests, term papers and graduation theses as scheduled by the curriculum. In-service training is an objective necessity for the education system. The Extramural Faculty is characterized by a high quality of education and trains specialists for work in all spheres of legal activity. The students, who have practical experience of legal work, successfully combine it with fundamental theoretical knowledge. Every year over 700 students graduate from the Extramural Faculty of Odessa National Academy of Law. The students of the faculty take an active part in the social life of the Academy, sports competitions, the KVN (Club of merry and quick-witted), amateur art groups, etc. The faculty is proud of its graduates, such as M.V. Sokyrko, S.F. Mayboroda, M.M. Odaynyk (the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine); N.A. Romanova (the Head of Chernigiv region Council); I.D. Sorkin (the Supreme Council of Justice); A.V. Tereschenko (the Prosecutor’s Office in Vinnitsa region) and many others. At present, training of legal practitioners is carried out at the faculty in the following specialties: state administration and international legal relations; civil law; prosecution and investigation; social security law.
