The Faculty of Advocacy

Dean of the Faculty of Advocacy, Candidate of Law, Associate Professor Vasyl I. FORMANYUK

Educational work  is supervised by the deputy head of the faculty – Candidate of Law, Assistant Professor A.V.Strelnikov. Teaching and methodological work is performed by the specialists in the field of teaching methods -   A.P.Mamedova and A.I.Korchagina.

The Faculty of Advocacy of Odessa National Academy of Law was reorganized from the Institute of Advocacy of ONLA in October 2005, to meet the need for highly qualified lawyers specializing in the field of advocacy.

The students of the faculty gain knowledge and skills in legal, economic, organizational , social-political and humanitarian spheres which is necessary for their future work in law firms and legal advice offices with the purpose of protecting   rights and representing interests of physical and legal persons.

Advocacy (the Bar) is a social organization of professional lawyers, which performs an important social function – protection of rights and lawful interests of citizens and organizations.

The main social mission, the basic purpose of advocacy is human rights protection, which is the highest criterion of humanity, progress and “ quality” of advocacy.

More and more graduates want to become advocates, and the training of specialists in advocacy provided by the faculty with the curriculum being correspondingly adapted is a guarantee of future graduates competitiveness in the labor market.

The Faculty of Advocacy trains professionals in the sphere of jurisprudence who at the end of their studies obtain the degrees of “Bachelor”, “Specialist” and “Master ”(LLM). The legal training is realized through full-time form of education on budget and commercial basis.

Today 270 students from 20 regions (oblast’) of Ukraine and the Autonomous Republic of Crimea are studying at the faculty.

This very fact is the acknowledgement of the high proficiency level of future lawyers trained at the faculty of Advocacy of ONLA.

The faculty comprises the leading departments of Odessa National Academy of Law:

The Theory of the State and Law Department.

Head of the department is pro-rector for scientific work in ONLA, Doctor of Law, Professor U.M.Oborotov. Members of the department are Doctors of Law, Professors U.M.Oborotov, A.P.Ovchinnikova, V.V.Zavalnyuk, Candidates of Law, Assistant Professors V.V.Dudchenko, A.F.Krizhanivsky, L.D.Dolgopolova, S.P.Kravchenko, G.M.Chumakova, Z.M.Yudin, O.S.Melnichuk, Candidates of Historical Sciences A.I.Kormich, N.M.Krestovska.

The Department of History of the State and Law.

Head of the department is Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor V.P.Glinyany. Members of the department are Doctors of Sciences V.P.Glinyany, P.P. Muzichenko, Candidates of Law N.V.Yefremova, N.V.Anishchuk, Candidate of Historical Sciences K.M.Vitman.

The Department of Philosophy

Head of the department is Doctor of Philosophy, Professor O.A.Ivakin. Members of the department are Doctors of Philosophy, Professors O.A.Ivakin, T.V.Rozova, Candidate of Philosophy  L.M.Sumarokova.

Much attention at the faculty is devoted to the organization of students’ scientific research. Students participate in the work of such scientific societies of the faculty as “Logos”, “Oratory”, “Legal Civilization”.

Students of the faculty take part in international, national and regional students’ scientific and practical conferences which are usually held in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Lviv, Odessa (Ukraine) and in CIS countries and Poland. They have the results of their research published in scientific works collections.

The Faculty provides the graduate course specializing in advocacy.

According to this specialization the Faculty of Advocacy provides future specialists-advocates with multi-disciplinary training on the budget or commercial basis to enrich the Bar, law agencies, other enterprises and organizations with highly qualified lawyers able to give the best legal aid to the  population.

Prominent advocates who practice law as well as the representatives of the judiciary are invited to lecture to the students of the Faculty.

The administration of the faculty prioritizes different scientific, cultural, and sporting activities.

The stress is made on the development of sports. Students practice different sports, reaching high results in competitions. The following students should be mentioned: students - members of the Academy team in swimming: V.Yurchenya (master of sports), V.Ulanova, V.Makukha, the team in track and field athletics: U.Kurkudym (Champion of Ukraine), U.Levchenko, O.Muravska, A.Ribakova (master of sports), D.Grishchuk (master of sports), the weightlifter V.Zhukovsky (master of sports) .

Much attention is paid to the formation of the students’ civil position. They  actively participate in  the  students’ self-administration.
