The Faculty of International Relations and Legal journalism is among the youngest at Odessa National Academy of Law. It has been introducing the system of training highly skilled lawyers specializing in European and International Law.

On the basis of the Institute of European Law, the Faculty of Legal Journalism  and Judicial Administrative Faculty - specialization “International Legal Relations”  following the Academy structure improvement and its arrangement under the Law of Ukraine “On Higher Education” the Faculty of International Relations and Legal Journalism was established in 2005.

Presently the Faculty offers courses of study leading to three degrees: a Bachelor of Laws, a Master of Laws and the professional diploma of a Specialist (full-time budgetary and contract basis).  The graduates obtain a state diploma in “Legal Jurisprudence” and are given a qualification of “jurist”, accordingly.

The Faculty of International Relations and Legal journalism gives training to more than 396 students including about 37 students from 10 countries of the world which contributes to the international recognition of the degrees obtained at our Faculty.

The Faculty incorporates three leading departments:

Department of European Union Law and Comparative Jurisprudence

  (Head of Department - professor Minas Ramzesovich Arakeljan).

Department of International Law and International Legal Relations

   (Head of Department -  professor Mark Efimovich Cherkes).

Department of Foreign Languages

  (Head of Department, doctor of Philology, professor Vera Yaroslavovna Mizetskaya).

Department of Legal Psychology and Pedagogics

   (Head of Department - professor Anatoliy Ivanovich Pankov).

 Professors and lecturers at the Faculty have recently published a number of study guides, manuals and textbooks entitled:

  • “International Law” prof. M.E. Cherkes;

  • “Degree research in International Law: writing strategies, registration, defense” assist. prof. T.S. Kivalova, assist. prof. T.R. Korotkiy;

  • “Comparative Ecological Law” assist. prof. E.A. Surilova;

  • “Regulation of foreign economic activity in Ukraine” assist. prof. A.K. Vishnjakov;

  • “High school Pedagogics” prof. A.I. Pankov., prof. O. Y.Netudihatka;

  • “International Contracts” /collected decrees/ assist. prof. T.S.Kivalova, assist. prof. T.R. Korotkiy, editor prof. M.E.Cherkes.

Highly professional educational process envisages continuous scientific-research activity of the specialists at the departments of the Faculty of International Relations and Legal journalism.

T.R.Korotkiy and N.A. Yakubovskaya have successfully defended thesis in law; Y.V. Yulinetskaya - thesis in Philology; H.N Behruz - doctor’s thesis in law.

The curriculum allows students to specialize in two areas: “International-Legal relations” and “Legal Journalism”.

The graduates of “International-Legal relations” obtain wide spectrum of knowledge and opportunity to apply them both in central and local executive bodies (courts, local self-governing authorities, law companies and establishments cooperating with foreign organizations) filling the positions of lawyers, notaries and advocates.

Most of the “Legal Journalism” graduates will successfully occupy positions within various establishments requiring high legal education (press-services and analytical centers of central and local executive bodies, law enforcement authorities, organs of justice, local self-governing authorities).

In order to provide its students with a wide range of academic knowledge in Mass Media Law, copyright and protection of journalists’ rights the Academy frequently cooperates with the National Union of Journalists and National Radio Company of Ukraine.

The range of core and profession-oriented subjects comprises “International Law”, “EU Law”, “International Private Law”, “International Contracts”, “International Legal aspects of Ukraine’s integration to the EU”, “Diplomatic Protocol”, “Formation Legal fundamentals of the EU”, “Procedure in the EC bodies”, “International agreement in the domestic Ukrainian Law system”.

For students specializing in «legal journalism» the following courses are developed: «Media Council of Europe Standards », «Journalistic investigation», «Organizing the work of press-service», «Legal psychology», «Nature of journalistic text», «Journalistic genres», «Legal adjusting of Mass-Media activity in Ukraine», «Bases of journalism».

In order to better familiarize students with the nuances of foreign legal systems and comparative legal studies the Academy invites distinguished legal professionals and representatives from international organizations to work with the Faculty. In recent years the faculty has hosted Philip Kirsh – President of the International Criminal Court, Paul Anri Arni – Head of International Red Cross committee regional delegation (Ukraine, Moldova, Belorussia), Z.S. Marshanija - Consul General of Georgia in Ukraine, A.G. Grachev - Consul General of Russia in Ukraine, G.M. Willard – President of information agency “Willard Group”. Visiting Fulbright representative Vava Kochinskaya also made valuable contribution to the Faculty academic community.

Special attention is paid to improving the students’ knowledge in the field of practical command of the English language and computer technologies. The Faculty provides a four-year training course of English and gives the opportunity to start studying Spanish, French or German from the second year of education.

The language training programme for foreign students is efficiently introduced in the educational process of the Department of Foreign Languages.

 

The Faculty regularly hosts prominent legal professionals and professors from the leading universities of Europe and the USA.
