The Academy Library

back...

In 2000 the library staff started systematic accumulation of works by the scholars of the Academy. Nowadays it amounts to 700 items and is widely used for presentational and practical purposes. The bibliographical department has set up the stock of dissertations, author’s abstracts, methodological literature, bulletins and normative instruments of the Higher Attestation Commission of Ukraine and other countries to assist the post- graduate and doctoral students in writing their papers. For ten years the bibliographical department has collected and systematized the documents concerning the history of legal education in Odessa, the history of the Academy, materials about prominent scholars, normative-legal acts, publications in the Ukrainian and foreign press, the materials of seminars and conferences, which were held in the Academy, etc. Every day the staff of the department reviews hundreds of articles for the electronic catalogues. Nowadays the total number of the Library Issues exceeds 100, 000 of bibliographical descriptions. The bibliographers organize individual consultations for the students to teach them how to use the reference and searching system, especially the electronic catalogue. Besides the Liga:Zakon (Law) computer system, the readers have access to the web-sites of the government bodies of Ukraine, higher educational establishments and libraries of the world. The library received its first computer in summer 2000. Today it has its local computer net connected to the Academy net with 50 computers (10 readers' catalogues, 1 server, 39 operational stations for the librarians). In 2001 The Academy library was the first to acquire the UniLib automatized informational library system, elaborated by the computer centre of Kharkiv National University of Internal Affairs.

Due to UniLib almost all the procedures in the library have been computerized:

 - Accumulation of book stock: registration of deliveries, monitoring material and financial flow, bar-codes, availability of books, subscription to the periodicals.

 - Processing of literature: formulation of bibliographical descriptions for the new purchases and for the existing editions;

 - Book-stock maintenance: relocation of resources to subsidiary stock with relevant sigla assigning, filling in the documents for literature transfer.

 - Serving the readers: registration of readers, (filling in electronic readers' cards), lending books, using the bar-code.

 - Reference-informational service: the electronic catalogue search in all spheres of bibliographical description, preserving the results of description in text-editor Word.

 - System administration: monitoring users, resources, setting up the system, server regulation of database.

 - Reader’s Web-interface service: enables distance work with an electronic catalogue of the library.

The book-stock of the electronic library is constantly increasing. It includes all kinds of Academy’s own and acquired resources, such as:

 - the documents on electronic carriers ( CD-ROM, DVD-ROM )- over 300 units on the history of world culture, economics, politics and others containing bibliographical, full-text and other information;

 - over 120 digital text documents.

The Library offers its readers such collections of electronic resources as:

 - electronic catalogue containing bibliographical descriptions of documents and full electronic texts attached to them;

 - electronic texts;

 - review journals, bibliographical indices, dissertations and author’s abstracts, issued by the Academy or obtained elsewhere;

 - list of useful links to Internet resources ( including free text resources of legal issues; periodicals with free access to full texts).

Due to computerized service a reader may expect:

 - to have access to any of the above mentioned electronic resources, including the full text database of author’s abstracts to dissertations, provided by the V.Vernadsky University Library within the frame of " The Library - to society" project;

 - to gain access to the electronic library of dissertations, defended by the scholars of the Academy;

 - to save the search results.

The electronic catalogue of the Library is the result of the team work of the entire library staff, accessible on the local net of the library and via the Internet. It is extremely popular with the readers. The catalogue contains about 200,000 reviews, including over 52,000 book reviews; 120,000 serial issues; about 120,000 analytical reviews, over 500 editions on electronic carriers; 260 dissertations.

The Academy library is the only library in Odessa that has access to electronic catalogue, containing the whole stock of documents, via the Internet. Links: www. onua. edu. ua, Íàóêîâà áiáëiîòåêà: lib. onua. edu. ua.

The sustainable support on behalf of the management, the Academic Council and all the units of the Academy as well as the professionalism of the library staff ensured evolution of the library, which now occupies a worthy place in the common educational space as a unit providing informational support of research and educational process.

The Library is headed by its director M.Solodukhina, a professional who has spent 40 years collecting the book stock. The librarians O.V. Bohdanovich, K.P.Bohun, V.O. Buhta, L.M.Bondar, S.A. Holovintseva, H.F.Hritsenko, O.M. Demyanenko, O.S.Derevnina, S.M. Makukha, O.S.Petrenko, A.V. Rakul, V.I.Radchenko, S.V. Romanenko, H.Ya.Sirotkina, T.M.Stefanchyshina, L.A.Taran, N.K.Uskova and many others use all their knowledge, creativity and professionalism to make the library the information and spiritual center of the Academy.

High professionalism of the staff, their competence and creative approach towards their work were well appreciated by the President of the Academy, academician S. Kivalov: "In Odessa National Academy of Law we pay special attention to our library and its book stock and we are proud of the fact that the Academy library is the best in Odessa and one of the best in Ukraine."
