Preparatory Department
Head of the Preparatory Department, Candidate of Law, Associate Professor Lyudmila K. TSARYOVA
The Preparatory Department of Odessa National Academy of Law has been working since the foundation of the Academy. The first students were admitted in 1998. The main goal of the Department is training of the prospective students for taking exams in jurisprudence and Ukrainian. The preparation of students for entrance examinations to higher educational institutions is carried out in two areas according to the license of ONLA: preparatory department (term of education 9 months) and pre-college training (term of education 3 or 6 months). To be admitted to the Department the applicants should submit secondary education certificate and be interviewed in the basics of jurisprudence and Ukrainian. The students study full-time. The schedule of classes at the Department is the same as that for full-time students. The students of the Preparatory Department study jurisprudence (352 hours) and Ukrainian (352 hours) in detail. The students have to master the works of Ukrainian writers and poets whose texts are used while writing dictations. For this reason Ukrainian literature (80 hours) is included into the list of disciplines studied in the groups. Not to lose the skills of foreign languages that the students acquired at school a course of foreign languages (40 hours) is included into the curriculum. The curriculum of the group provides for a course of basic IT (60 hours) since the academic process at ONLA is carried out with the help of information technologies. This enables the students use the computers in the course of studies. After finishing the academic year the students of the groups take finals in the Basics of Jurisprudence and Ukrainian and the results are rated as entrance examinations to the Academy. According to the Rules of Admission to the Academy the students who receive excellent and good marks are recommended by the Admission commission for enrolment. Such students study at the Academy at the expense of the state. The rest of the applicants participate in the contest on the regular basis for budget and contract vacancies. The classroom space of the Academy is used for preparing potential students for admission to the higher educational institutions. Classes are delivered by the professors and teachers of the Academy. The students of the Preparatory Department have access to the funds of the library, reading halls and the sports centre of the Academy. Persons who have either received secondary education or still study in senior classes at schools, gymnasiums and lyceums are admitted to pre-college groups. The schedule in such groups is convenient for the applicants (3 – 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10.00-2:.20 p.m. on Sunday). This gives a possibility to the students to combine their study at school and in pre-college groups. In pre-college groups which get three-month training the students take one subject, either the Basics of Jurisprudence or Ukrainian at their choice. In the groups which get six-month training they study the Basics of Jurisprudence and Ukrainian. The classes are conducted in the form of lectures and seminars. When the course is finished the students are given tests to check their knowledge. To enable applicants from other cities to take tests in the Basics of Jurisprudence intensive training has been organized. The 13-day intensive course comprises 100 academic hours, embracing the material necessary for taking the exam. Thanks to high professionalism of the teaching staff, excellent resource base, convenient schedule and friendly attitude towards the students of the course the prospective entrants acquire deep knowledge. This gives them an opportunity to pass entrance examinations successfully and become students of Odessa National Academy of Law.
