The Department of Foreign Languages is a part of the Faculty of Civil and Economic Justice and provides training for full-time and part-time higher education students at all faculties of the National University "Odesa Law Academy".

The staff of the Department provides basic training for all educational programmes of the National University "Odesa Law Academy" in the following courses: English, German, French and Latin. The knowledge of foreign languages, which they will be able to use in their practical and scientific work, is a necessary component of higher education applicants’ training enabling them to receive special information from foreign resources, to undergo internships in the countries of Western Europe, and to cooperate with international organizations. Ukraine is an equal partner in the community of democratic countries, and, hence, in the educational, scientific and professional world. That is the reason why mastering foreign languages has become an integral part of our state development.

Highly qualified, professional-oriented training of higher education students in foreign languages applying both traditional and innovative methods comprises the main goal of the department activity. Special attention is given to improving the lecturers’ qualifications and their professional skills. The department regularly holds scientific and methodical seminars, round table discussions, internships at distance learning courses and/or specialized departments in Ukraine and abroad.

The research work of the Department of Foreign Languages is an integral part of the fundamental research of the department staff, which is conducted within the framework of the general theme: "Cognitive and communicative studies of the Germanic and Romance languages", which reflects modern trends in the development of linguistic science. The annual scientific and practical conference "Academic studies in philology" has been launched on the basis of the department.

The educational and scientific work of the department members is reflected in annual publications of training manuals, methodical recommendations, scientific articles, and participation in international conferences, seminars, and trainings.

The department teaches the following courses:

Besides the above mentioned the department teaches the following courses: • Business English; • Practical English Language Course; • Theory and Practice of Translation; • Professional Communication Skills; • Foreign Language of the Lawyer; • English Phonetics; • Linguistics; • Lexicology of the English Language; • Terminology; • English Grammar; • Professional Foreign Language in Public Administration; • Professionally Oriented English; • Foreign Language (academic writing); • Foreign Language (listening and professional speaking); • Foreign Language (analysis of scientific/professional text).
