National University “Odesa Law Academy” has joined the international project “Training Legal Professionals in EU Law for Ukraine’s EU Integration”, which has received funding from the Swedish Institute (Svenska institutet).

The project is coordinated by Örebro University (Sweden) in cooperation with Ukrainian partner institutions, including National University “Odesa Law Academy”, the National School of Judges of Ukraine, the Notary Chamber of Ukraine, the Prosecutor’s Training Centre of Ukraine, and the Ukrainian National Bar Association.

On March 12, a presentation of ELSA Odesa for university students took place in the Meeting Hall of the Academic Council of the National University “Odesa Law Academy”.

Specifically for this event, the ELSA Odesa team visited the students of NU “OLA” to talk about the activities of ELSA — the largest international network of law students, which has been uniting young lawyers in 43 European countries for more than 40 years.

On the initiative of the President of the National University “Odesa Law Academy”, Sergiy Kivalov, students of the Faculty of Civil and Commercial Justice took part in an international academic mobility programme across Europe – a journey that combined learning, practical experience, and acquaintance with the cultural heritage of leading European countries.

The trip was organised with the support of the French non-governmental organisation “Ukraine in Europe” and the International Relations Office of the National University “Odesa Law Academy”.

During the programme, the students were accompanied by Associate Professor of the Department of Foreign Languages, Svitlana Yeromenko.

At the initiative of University President Sergiy Kivalov, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between NU OLA and the UK-based international defense company LAVR UK LIMITED.  The memorandum was signed by Professor Oleg Todoshchak, rector of the NU OLA, and Russell Colson, director of LAVR UK LIMITED. The two parties agreed to collaborate on the project "Proposal for Institutional Review and Modernization of the ISPS Code in Light of Emerging Maritime Threats."

A new issue of the leading Ukrainian legal journal "Pravo Ukrainy" (Law of Ukraine) No. 11 for 2024 has been published, dedicated to the current topic of the development of the doctrine of criminal law of Ukraine on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of the distinguished Ukrainian scholar, Professor Volodymyr Stashys.

The research examines contemporary problems of criminal law doctrine in the context of Professor V. V. Stashys's scholarly legacy. Among the contributors are professors Yevhen Streltsov, Viacheslav Tuliakov, Nataliia Myroshnychenko, associate professors Liliia Timofieieva, Liudmyla Abakina-Piliavska, and other authoritative experts.

The Rector of the National University “Odesa Law Academy”, Professor Oleg Todoshchak, and the First Vice-Rector for Academic Activity and Academic Management of the Nicolae Testemițanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Dr. Habil. Olga Cernetchi, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding.

During the meeting, the leadership of both universities discussed key directions of higher education reform, institutional development strategies, opportunities for expanding cooperation, and ways to strengthen inter-university partnership.

The Memorandum provides for the enhancement of mutually beneficial relations, the exchange of scientific and educational best practices, and the promotion of collaboration between faculty members, experts, and students of both institutions. The parties also agreed to jointly use research results, publish academic outputs, and share educational and scientific experience.

In November 2025, the National University “Odesa Law Academy” concluded a Cooperation Agreement in the field of scientific activity with the National Centre for Forensic Expertise under the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Moldova. The negotiations and preparation of this agreement had been ongoing in recent years.

The National Centre for Forensic Expertise under the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Moldova is a state forensic institution within the justice system of the Republic of Moldova. It is a leading organisation accredited in accordance with international standards and conducts a wide range of forensic examinations for law enforcement agencies, courts, and other stakeholders in Moldova. The Centre covers almost all traditional fields, including criminalistic, economic, accounting, technical, construction, automotive, and certain types of medical forensic examinations. It brings together highly qualified forensic experts who regularly undergo international certification and professional development, ensuring that their expertise, methodologies, and practices meet contemporary scientific requirements.

The university leadership and staff warmly congratulate Professor Tetyana MALYARENKO from the Department of Journalism and Professor Borys KORMYCH, Head of the Department of Maritime, Customs, and Information Law, on receiving the 2025 Huttenbach Prize from the American Association for the Study of Nationalities.

Faculty members of the Department of Cybersecurity at the National University “Odesa Law Academy” presented the results of their research at the international conference 2025 IEEE 6th KhPI Week on Advanced Technology (KhPIWeek), held from 6 to 10 October 2025.

The scientific paper titled “Analysis and Optimization of Processes for Integrating Smart Grid Objects into the Critical Infrastructure Cyber Protection System” was presented by a team of authors — Serhii Kukharenko, Mykola Ovchynnykov, Olena Chepurna, Yevhen Cherevko, Tetiana Kuklinova, and Viktor Boiko, who serve as associate professors and professors of the Department of Cybersecurity, led by Professor Stanislav Horbachenko, Head of the Department.

The leadership and staff of the University sincerely congratulate Viacheslav Oleksiiovych Tuliakov, Professor at the Department of Criminal Law of the National University “Odesa Law Academy,” ad hoc Judge of the European Court of Human Rights, Doctor of Law, Professor, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Legal Sciences of Ukraine, Honored Scientist and Engineer of Ukraine, on being awarded the Mykola Panov Prize for his cycle of scientific works “Advancing to European Standards in Criminal Law” (link).

The Mykola Panov Prize was established on the initiative of the National Academy of Legal Sciences of Ukraine, Yaroslav Mudryi National Law University, the journal Law of Ukraine, and the NGO “Unbroken Ukraine.” It is awarded to authors of new and original scientific works exclusively in the field of criminal law, published within the past three years, and is one of the most prestigious awards in the field of legal science.

In July 2025, students and faculty of the National University “Odesa Law Academy” participated in the annual Summer School on Comparative Private Law, which the Faculty of Law of the University of Salzburg has been organising for over 25 years.

The school offered an intensive programme: over two weeks, participants explored more than 35 legal systems worldwide — from England, Austria, Germany, and France to South Africa, Japan, China, Argentina, and Puerto Rico.

The National University "Odessa Law Academy" proudly announces that Doctor of Law, Professor, and Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Legal Sciences of Ukraine, Vyacheslav Oleksiyovych Tuliakov, has been reinstated on the list of ad hoc judges of the European Court of Human Rights for 2025 to participate in cases on behalf of Ukraine.

Vyacheslav Oleksiyovych is one of the leading scholars in the fields of criminal law and human rights, having progressed within our university from an Аssociate professor to Doctor of Law, Professor, Vice-Rector for International Relations, and Honored Scientist of Ukraine. His scholarly output includes over 380 publications; he has supervised 5 doctoral and 26 candidate dissertations and actively promotes best practices in legal protection and jurisprudence at both national and international levels.

On June 4-5, 2025, the XI (24th) Lviv Criminal Justice Forum was held in Lviv. This year’s theme, «War and Peace & Crime and Punishment», served as a platform for discussing the most pressing challenges facing the criminal justice system in times of armed conflict and post-war transformation.

The Forum was co-organized by the OSCE Support Programme for Ukraine, the State Bureau of Investigation, and the NGO «Lviv Criminal Justice Forum».  The event brought together around one hundred participants representing state authorities, the judiciary, law enforcement, the academic community, and civil society. Odesa’s institutions of higher education were represented by Doctor of Law Nataliia Savinova, Doctor of Law Viacheslav Tuliakov, and PhD in Law Liliia Timofieieva.

Representatives of the National University “Odesa Law Academy” - Head of the Department of Economics and Management Olha Kibik and Associate Professor of the Department of Psychology Yuliia Shmalenko - took part in the International Staff Training Week at the University of Seville, Spain, which took place from May 19 to 23, 2025, under the Erasmus+ international mobility program.

The Magna Charta Observatory (MCO) is launching a new cycle of the international Student Essay Contest 2025, which is open to students of higher education institutions from around the world. The competition is designed to give students the opportunity to express their point of view on topical issues of university education development and stakeholder engagement in the educational process.

Doctor of Law, Professor at the National University "Odesa Law Academy", ad hoc Judge of the European Court of Human Rights, and Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Legal Sciences of Ukraine, Viacheslav Tuliakov, has received the prestigious invitation to serve as an author and editor for a special issue of International Policy Review dedicated to Ukraine. This ambitious academic project is being implemented by IE University in collaboration with such renowned American institutions as George Washington University, Georgetown University, and American University.

This is not merely recognition of an individual scholar’s professional accomplishments — it is yet another affirmation that the Odesa School of Law is no longer a “dark horse” but a stable and confident player in the international academic arena.

This year, Corresponding Member of National Academy of Legal Science Professor Viacheslav Tuliakov from the Department of Criminal Law at the National University «Odesa Law Academy» temporarily left his beloved Alma Mater to take part in an academic mobility program at ESIC University (Pozuelo de Alarcón, Madrid, Spain). In this cozy suburb of the Spanish capital, he not only taught a course on Human Rights Law but also engaged in a true cultural exchange mission — promoting the Odesa style in education: with humor, substance, and deep respect for human dignity.

Professor Kateryna Nekit from the Department of Civil Law and Associate Professor Yurii Orzikh from the same department are participating in the "Mis(sing) Information" research project initiated by Örebro University, Sweden which is funded by the Swedish funding body "Riksbankens Jubileumsfond."

On 3-5 April 2025, Vira Tokareva, PhD in Law, Associate Professor of the Department of Civil Law, attended the Human Rights Days, an international conference on human rights organised by the Central European Academy in Budapest. The speakers at the conference were judges of the European Court of Human Rights: Mykola Gnatovsky (Ukraine), Latif Huseynov (Azerbaijan), Tim Eicke (Germany), Lado Chanturia (Georgia), Peter Patzolay (Hungary), Saadet Yuksel (Turkey), and Alena Polackova (Slovakia).

‘Human Rights Days are timed to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the signing of the European Convention on Human Rights in Rome. Since its adoption in 1950 and entry into force in 1953, the Convention has been a cornerstone in the protection of human rights in Europe.
