From February 28 to March 1, 2020, national selection rounds of the 2020 Jessup Moot Court competition took place at High Anti-Corruption Court of Ukraine in Kyiv. NU “OLA” team –

Veronika Pshenichnikova, Valeriia Kravchenko, Yevgen Malyarchuk, Olga Ivanitsa and Kristina Semenenko – coached by Oleksii Plotnikov and Viktoriia Muzyka successfully took part in it. At the beginning of March 2020, NU “OLA” team was selected as an exhibition team to attend the White & Case International Rounds of the 61st Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition. The International Rounds will be 12 April - 18 April 2020 in Washington, D.C.

The presence of Harold Koh, a professor of Yale University who is part of the Ukrainian delegation representing Ukraine before the International Court of Justice in Den Hague and International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Hamburg, made these selection rounds extremely real and special for all the participants.

The 2020 Jessup case concerned a set of acute legal problems, that are now a subject to sharp debates in the expert community, and that pose serious challenges before the international judiciary. Firstly, this is a question of succession of states with respect to treaties. Secondly, this is the question of legality of and responsibility for the autonomous weapons systems. Thirdly, it is the issue of self-judging necessity clauses in trade agreements, that enable states to avoid responsibility for non-compliance with international commercial and investment agreements. And finally, the case raised the questions related to immunity of high-ranking officials from criminal procedures before the International Criminal Court.

We congratulate and wish them more success ahead!
